Brief Artist Statement

Artist Statement 2026

My work begins with fragments—images, histories, gestures, and cultural symbols that already carry weight—and rearranges them into new visual relationships. Working primarily in painting and drawing, I edit and recombine studio photography, found imagery, art historical references, text, and pop ephemera into layered compositions that question hierarchy and reshape inherited narratives. My recent work follows some tropes of both Modernism and painting in its grand scale. But that contrasts sharply with my subject matter, color palettes and my most recent pieces also push the wall mounted art object beyond the flat rectangle.

Each work begins as accumulation—visual fragments gathered from contemporary culture and templates of art history—then moves through processes of translation, iteration, and transformation. Figures are repositioned, symbols are reframed, and familiar visual languages are set into tension. Careful passages of paint coexist with raw, gestural mark-making, producing tension between control and urgency, refinement and disruption. Through this recomposition, I aim to make visible both conflict and mutual support within shared social space.

My work engages social and political realities not through reporting “how it is”, but through structural editing: shifting attention, reorganizing power within the image, and creating questions about relationships of the assembled forms. Each diptych becomes an extension of this process, guiding movement and legibility so that viewers encounter layered narratives over time.
