I can’t remember exactly what started it, but I do recall it was only the cars that were “cooler” and faster than our parents’ cars. We didn’t know the term “luxury cars” back then, but we were keen at picking vehicles that were aspirational. Later on through television, movies and music it became clear that your dating opportunities and potential mate might well be determined by the what kind of car you could afford as well. The original song lyrics by scrawled into the background of the piece underline this cultural sentiment. So imagine the heartbreak of learning my vision would never allow me behind the wheel. This painting is a self portrait of me riding a donkey cart. The image humorously portrays me as resourceful, industrious and simultaneously not at all as attractive as a person driving their own “Benzo” or Bentley. For me, it caused something to bubble up inside me. An anguish, at the time, I couldn't name. One thing I recall, both then and now, was how excited I was when I realized that this actor that played James Brown so well was going to play Black Panther. And HOW he and that ensemble cast exceeded my inner child's wildest expectations. It's not that we lost a great entertainer, or a talented actor that could occupy multiple historic and fantasy rolls. Chadwick’s body of work did sit apart as a pinnacle in film but the way he moved in the world and what by extension he demanded from himself and from it - from ALL of us - gave me hope. My painting Chadwick was an attempt to process all of those feelings and to remind us how lucky we were to witness his bright light and to inspire us to move with intention, integrity and purpose like he did.
